The link between the number of sexual partners a person has had and their risk of developing throat cancer has been reaffirmed by new research. The virus infects cells, occasionally causing them to become cancerous, sometimes over several decades. While nine out of 10 people clear the infection naturally within two years, a third of throat cancer cases in the UK are linked to HPV, which is responsible for nearly all incidents in younger people. To better understand the risk, scientists from Johns Hopkins University analysed people with HPV-related throat cancer, as well as individuals who did not have the disease. What You Need to Know About HIV Transmission, Risk Factors, and Prevention | Everyday Health
HIV is spread primarily by unprotected sex including anal and oral sex , contaminated blood transfusions , hypodermic needles , and from mother to child during pregnancy , delivery, or breastfeeding. Methods of prevention include safe sex , needle exchange programs , treating those who are infected , as well as both pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis. HIV made the jump from other primates to humans in west-central Africa in the early-to-mid 20th century. Owing to their nonspecific character, these symptoms are not often recognized as signs of HIV infection.
HIV Infection and Cancer Risk
If you are infected with HIV, the virus slowly weakens your ability to fight illness. But medical treatments, including medicines and earlier use of medications, can help your body resist the virus. They do this by slowing the growth of HIV and delaying or preventing certain life-threatening conditions.
When considering the issue of female-to-female sexual transmission it is important to draw a distinction between the risk of transmission by this route and diagnoses of HIV infection in women who identify as lesbian. There have been only six reported cases of woman-to-woman sexual transmission, and these reports need to be viewed with the same caution as any other case reports of transmission through oral sex cunnilingus. In the early years of the epidemic, investigations of the source of infection in US women failed to identify any cases of female-to-female transmission.
