Sharon Lawrence, the actress who plays assistant district attorney Sylvia Costas on ABC 's NYPD Blue, was the only one in the cast exempt from the series' infamous nudity clause when the show made its debut last fall. However, she has bared quite a bit since Lawrence's character became involved romantically with Andy Sipowicz, the alcoholic detective played by Dennis Franz. Lawrence initially was exempt from the nudity clause because she wasn't a full cast member, a situation that changed at the beginning of the year. But by the time Lawrence shed her clothes, she had an opportunity to see how nudity was handled on the show.

The move comes in response to network angst over the brief encounter and is a compromise solution between nervous ABC suits who wanted the entire scene excised and Blue exec producer Steven Bochco who said he wasn't cutting anything.
